VisID

VisID app information

Privacy, data use, and upload information for the VisID Android app during the SURPIC public test.

Public test status

VisID is a companion app for the noncommercial SURPIC public test. VisID may access public ship, class, and map data through token-protected mobile APIs. SURPIC does not currently provide public user accounts.

Catalog and map data

The app may request public catalog and map endpoints over HTTPS. These endpoints return curated public SURPIC data only and must not expose admin notes, raw imports, X registry data, audit logs, tokens, LLM output, or private media.

Photo analysis

Users can choose or capture a ship photo for local visual comparison. If the user starts AI analysis, the image, manual hints, and optional coarse coordinates may be sent to SURPIC and OpenAI for assistive ship/class identification. AI analysis results are suggestions and are not automatically published.

Upload rights

Saved recognitions stay local until the user uploads them as SURPIC review proposals. Proposal upload requires an in-app notice and affirmative checkbox. The uploader must confirm that they may upload the image and grant SURPIC/VisID a non-exclusive right to store, analyze, review, crop/resize, derive metadata from, and publish the image where it is accepted for the catalog. The uploader can choose anonymous public attribution. Uploaded images remain subject to takedown, correction, attribution, and deletion requests.

Pending proposal images are retained until review. Rejected proposal images are eligible for deletion after 30 days. Approved proposal images are eligible for deletion from private proposal storage after 180 days; separately reviewed public media remains governed by the approved media record.

AI processing

OpenAI/AI processing is used only when the user starts AI analysis or when admins use internal review assistance. Recognition proposal upload itself creates a private SURPIC review candidate; it does not by itself publish the image or make an identification final.
