The Jiangkai-I Type 054 class was the first step in the PLAN's modern frigate family before the much larger Type 054A run. It combines anti-surface missiles, point or local air defence, ASW weapons, sensors and helicopter facilities for general escort work. The class is less capable than the Type 054A but important as the design bridge into China's current frigate force.
