The Type 054B class is the PLAN's new-generation frigate programme and appears intended to succeed or complement the mass-produced Type 054A. The larger hull and updated combat systems point toward stronger escort, ASW and local air-defence performance while retaining helicopter operations and anti-surface weapons. The class is still early in service, so its long-term fleet role will become clearer as more ships commission.
