Public summary

The Halifax class is Canada's current front-line surface combatant class and the backbone of the Royal Canadian Navy's frigate force. Modernized combat systems, SMART-S radar, ESSM, Harpoon, gun and CIWS armament, hull and towed-array sonar, torpedoes and CH-148 Cyclone aviation give the class a broad escort profile for NATO deployments, maritime security and ASW tasks. The ships remain central until the River-class destroyers replace them as Canada's future surface combatants.
