The Espora MEKO 140 class is Argentina's main corvette force for patrol, escort and regional surface-warfare tasks. Exocet missiles, gun armament, lightweight torpedoes, radar, sonar, combat-system equipment and helicopter facilities give it useful sea-control and presence capability in the South Atlantic. The class is smaller than the MEKO 360 destroyers, but it provides the fleet's most numerous missile-armed surface layer.
