Public summary
The Liaoning class gave the PLAN its first aircraft carrier and remains central to carrier training and early operational deployments. As a rebuilt ski-jump carrier operating J-15 fighters and helicopters, it developed the flight-deck, maintenance, escort and command practices needed for later Chinese carrier programmes. Its value is less in maximum sortie generation than in making carrier aviation a routine fleet skill.
