The Song Type 039 class was a key early indigenous Chinese diesel-electric submarine design. It helped move the PLAN beyond older Ming-class boats toward more modern hulls, weapons and sensors. Its role is coastal and regional sea denial with torpedoes and missile options, but it is less capable than the later Yuan AIP family.
