Sovremenny Class

The Sovremenny class destroyers were acquired from Russia to give the PLAN a sharp anti-surface strike capability and better medium-range air defence during a period of rapid fleet modernization. Their supersonic anti-ship missiles made them particularly relevant for sea-denial and surface action missions. They are now legacy combatants, but they played a major role in raising Chinese destroyer capability before newer indigenous classes matured.
