The Luyang I Type 052B class is a transitional PLAN destroyer design from the period when China was absorbing Russian and domestic combat-system influences. It combines medium-range air defence, anti-ship missiles, gun armament, sensors and helicopter operations for general escort work. Its significance lies in bridging older Luhu/Luhai-era combatants and the later phased-array Type 052C/052D families.
