Public description
The Luzhou Type 051C class gave the PLAN an interim long-range air-defence destroyer capability using Russian-derived missile systems. Built before the wider arrival of indigenous phased-array destroyers, it strengthened fleet air defence for high-value units and coastal approaches. The class is now a legacy layer, but it was an important step toward sustained area-air-defence operations.
